my applications freeze when I try to use a drop down menu - why?

All my office programs freeze when I use a drop down menu to save-as or
insert etc. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Office, but the
problem persists.
What is causing this and is there a fix.

I am using Windows XP Professional, and Office Professional 2003.

I just started getting the same problem. Last night I was able to insert
..jpegs into an Excel worksheet but today the same procedure causes the
application (not the system) to hang. It happens in Word too. And Outlook
won't let me attach files via the attach feature, but I can drag and drop.

Solved. Use Barry Watzman's technique for removing KB908531 update.
