My command tab keeps closing after I use one command

My Home tab [or any command tab] does not stay displayed. If I make a format
change the tab closes after each use. How do I keep the command tabs on the
ribbon open and displaying their contents until I switch tabs?

? Is it collapsing? If so, double-click the Home tab to "anchor" the Ribbon
open.
