My contact sub-address book does not show automatically

My husband is the main user of my Windows XP Prof. and I am another user.
When I log in under my name and go to outlook to write an email i run into
the following. I right click on the address book (sub of Contacts) and click
properties. I click on the Outlook Address Book Tab and check "show this
folder ..." I also right click on contacts and ask it NOT to show this
folder ...
This works in outlook when my husband is logged on but does not work for me
when I am logged on. What am I doing wrong?

So, you are trying to disable your root Contacts Folder as an email address
book and expecting the subfolders still to be email address books?

I expect this because for years (and even my husband has this capability by
logging in as himself currently) I have used "contacts" as my regular full
address book to sync with my palm. I have created a subfolder under contacts
called e-mail. I only keep email addresses here. Then I go to email
properties and check "use as outlook address book" and go to outlook
properties and uncheck that box. Now after having completed those steps,
when I click NEW while in inbox, and then click the TO icon, only my email
addresses show in the list. However, since separating my log in from my
husband, I no longer have this ability yet my husband's is still working
correctly as stated above.

Could you rephrase more clearly please? This makes no sense.
Is each of you using the same Outlook Data File in your profiles?

We are using separate Outlook Data Files. When my husband logs in to his
Windows XP login- he goes to outlook (Gene.PST) and checks his email. In
contacts, he has 2 books. Contacts (which is his main address book) and
under it he has E-Mail in which he only keeps the 20 or so people he emails
and each record only contains the full name and email address. When he click
"inbox" at left and clicks New to write a new email, his address book only
shows the email list. This is because he had right clicked on the email
address book and changed the properties to show as outlook address book. He
also changed the properties of contacts address book so that it DOESN'T show
as outlook address book. This works great for him but I am unable to get the
same result using my separate Outlook Data File (Sarah.PST). I did the same
steps as we did to his contacts & email address books but when writing an
email and choosing recipients from my address book, I still get Outlook
Address Book as my main book. I have to select E-Mail Address Book in order
to see recipients. I want to only see E-Mail Address Book while writing an
email.

I see.
That should be easy.
Just set your E-mail Address Book Folder to be the folder displayed first:
Open the Address Book > Tools > Options... > Show this address list first...
