"My Documents" folder saved as an FP Web! How do I change it back?

A

angeeart

I used FP2000 web wizard intending to create a new web. The wizard accidentally saved my entire "My Documents" folder into a web and it is now ALL read only. According to the directions I should be able to right click it and choose to save it as a folder again, however, there is no choice when I right click. HELP someone please! At this point I can't save music or images or anything into those default files. YIKES!!!

Open My Documents in Windows Explorer. Find and delete the file named
desktop.ini

Then right click My Documents select Properties and uncheck Read Only and
click OK.

Thanks for responding Steve. I am in Windows XP and did not see a desktop.ini file. I did take off the read-only and it looked like it was going to work but didn't "take" The folder is still set up as a website and each folder within this directory is still read-only with website _vti_cnf, private, and image folders in each separate folder inside it. This is now a 764 MB web now!!

I have converted webs to folders before and vice-verse, but, the only place that directory shows as a web is when I open FP and click on open to see files. It still does not give me the option to right click and change it back from a web to a folder. I am thinking I might have to set up a new directory and copy the folders into that one and then delete the _vti ...etc. folders one by one? Would that work? GOOD GRIEF!! :eek:}

Do you have Windows XP set to show hidden files??
If not you won't be able to see the desktop.ini file.

From FP, open each folder and FP should then convert them into individual webs.

After setting my computer to show hidden files..."My Documents" and each folder inside it has a
desktop.ini file in it. Removed FP info as directed by Stefan at the root directory....however
now...all of my FP webs that were inside of the main "My Documents" no longer show as webs. They all
still contain the derived, private, and images folders including "My Documents" folder. All of the
folders including "MD" are still read-only. Should I go back and delete all of the desktop.ini files
from all of them? Will I need to go back into FP and change each web that is now showing as a folder
back into webs? I appreciate any help I can get...Thanks to you both........ Angeeart

At this point however...all of the files, webs and folders inside the "My Documents" (MD) folder is still read-only and will not undo even though I choose to remove the read-only in the properties of the "MD" Steve said to go into the MD folder and remove the desktop.ini file....however, when I attempt to do that it says that it is a system file and I might mess up my computer or programs. Is this the file causing me to not be able to take off the read only? Do I need to remove all of the desktop.ini files in each folder under the main "My Documents" folder? Thanks again!

T

Thomas A. Rowe

What happen when you attempt to open each folder directly in FP, not Windows Explorer or My Computer
using the following:

File Menu | Open Web / Site and enter c:\My Documents\webname

It says hyperlinks etc. may not work and asks do I want to add FP information to the folder. If I choose "no" a server error opens that says the folder is not contained within a FP web. All of the folders that were FP webs do this. Good gosh what a mess!!!} All of the folders (including the "My Doc" folder) still contain web folders such as...private, images etc. and a new folder called "derived" that contains a norbot file. (Never had this in a web before) There are no _vti files anymore though. Everything is still....READ-ONLY.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

You have to select YES to let FP add the information need to make it a web.

Directly in the My Documents folder, you can delete the _private, images, derived, etc. and just
leave the folder containing your individuals webs.

When I changed to be able to view all the hidden system files...there were desktop.ini files in the "MD" and other folders under that directory. I have never seen one before either. Plus... I do not keep the My Documents folder on my desktop anyway...if that has anything to do with it.

S

The My Documents folder on the desktop isn't a folder, it's a link to a folder.

If your OS is Windows 2000, log on as administrator and then
remove the read only attribute.

Gottcha! So if I remove the desktop.ini file that is in MyDocuments which by

can't do that. It acts like it's changing and then reverts back. Everything in
the "MD" folder is still read only...and none of the folders inside have changed
either!

Correct.
But if you open a web folder that has the globe icon, there will be a
desktop.ini.

If the My webs folder displays the globe, there "should be" a desktop.ini file
in it.

My Webs doesn't have the globe, but FP2000 still consider it to be a web.

Also the Desktop.ini only allows for the customization of a folder, and is really not needed, nor
does it effect the use of FP, other than it being read-only.

Did you see my post of 4/17?

You want to remove all FP web data from your My Documents folder or you problems will not go away

Here are the steps again

WARNING - back up your My Documents Folder 1st, just in case
READ the Instructions and screen prompts Carefully at each step

Open FP and then use File Open Web/Site to Open the My Documents Web in FP
Select the root folder in Folder list (probably named My Documents) and right click to Delete
STOP and read the Options!
Select the 1st Option (Remove FP Information only)

PS
FP did not accidentally create a web of your My Documents folder
- you Did it by Not reading and entering or browsing to the correct folder for your new web

Recommend in the File New Web dialog next time you select and enter a top level folder name like C:\MyWeb1 for the web location
