My documents problems

When accessing files through my documents, the continual opening and closing
of folders and files gradually slows down the procedure to nearly a
standstill. Any answers?

Does this happen when you use File/Open in the Office applications or
when opening the My Documents folder on your Desktop? If the latter
then you may want to post this in one of the Windows newsgroups since
that's where the Windows experts tend to hang out - this newsgroup is
dedicated to Office related questions.

Here's a link for the Windows newsgroups:

My documents problems

When I open from the desktop it opens all the folders quickly and from then
on it opens each file quickly but as I close one file and then open another
and then close that and open another and so on it starts to get slower and
slower.

Are you saying this only happens with Office documents or does it
happen with files created in any application?

If it's specific to Office documents only then what version of Office
are you using?

I am using Office 97. I only use word and excel. It happens with both.

Okay...so if you create some text files using the Notepad and open
them from the folder does the same issue occur??

We need to determine if this is an Office related issue or a Windows
related issue because 'gradually slowing down' is difficult to
troubleshoot.

My documents problems

Before I answer that I will give you a little more detail about what is going
on. In the my documents folder on the desktop are quite a lot of folders and
then within those folders there are more folders and some with more folders
and then finally with files in them. On booting up the PC and drilling down
through these folders all is quite quick and the files open quickly. After a
while of opening the different folders to get to files things start to slow
up, although once I have drilled down the actual file opens quickly. Its the
actual part of drilling either up or down to get to the file that takes the
time. I did make a folder with some wordpad files in it and they open at the
same speed as a word file once I have drilled down to them.
Is the my documents folder supposed to be used in this type of operating
way. I wonder if all my files were not within folders but all in the one my
documents folder then would things operate better?
Many thanks for the help so far.

Hi Richard,

The additional details are indeed helpful. It tells me this isn't an
issue with Office, but rather a Windows issue. I do recall issues such
as those you describe occurring when there are more than 100
subfolders in a folder. If that's the case then move some of the
folders elsewhere.

Also, if you are opening a bunch of windows then perhaps navigating
the directory using the Folders view would help improve the
performance. Just click the "Folders" command in the toolbar and drill
down to the folder you need using the plus (+) beside the folder
instead of double-clicking to open the folder.

If this doesn't help then you may want to post your question (include
the details) in a Windows newsgroup since that's where the Windows
gurus tend to hang out. Here's a link for the Windows newsgroups:
