My email messages disappeared

After downloading my email messages from my hotmail
mailbox into my outlook, I then deleted all messages in my
hotmail mailbox to free space. To my horror, I discovered
that my downloaded messages in outlook also disappeared. I
thought downloaded messages stayed by default permenantly
on my hard drive! Tere're not there! What happened?? Is
there other steps I should have taken to save messaged
after being downloaded? Can anyone help. Thanks

Hello Jaff,

You have to bare in mind that your inboxes Hotmail and Outlook will
synchronize with each other. So whatever you do in either side, the effects
will appear in the other side as well.

If you want to free up space in your Hotmail inbox, you can copy the e-mails
to your harddisk before deleting them. Select all the message headers in your
Hotmail folder, then drag them into the Inbox folder of the local folder. By
doing so you would have copied a copy of all the messages in the Hotmail
Inbox to your local hard drive.

Hi Xero
Thanks for the prompt reply and the tip. is there a way to
synchronise one way, i.e. from my hotmail into my outlook?

I also tried to drag and drop as you suggested but nothing
happened. I'm not sure which part of hotmail mailbox to
drag from and where to drop, left or right mouse click.
thanks.

Perhaps I should explan where you can found the stuffs ...

Let's start with the Outloook Today. On your left, there is a column, from
the top, Favorite Folders, then All Mail Folders. Then in the All Mail
Folders column, under the first object, which is named 'Personal Folder' (or
otherwise if you have modified the default name). Under which you can find
these items: Deleted Items, Drafts, Inbox, Junk E-mail, Outbox and so on (may
not of the same order). The Inbox is where you should drag your e-mails to.

Then scroll down and you can find your Hotmail folder. Open any folder that
contains the e-mails that you want to copy. Then in the list of headers,
select all the messages you want to copy. (use the left button when
selecting; hold down the Ctrl key when selecting more than one item)
Afterwards, use the left button again to drag all the e-mails to the Inbox
that was mentioned before.

If you still can't get the picture, please do post a reply. :)

Perhaps you don't understand the paradigm of HTTP mail. All mail stays on
the server, but your mail client makes a copy on your local system so as to
provide better performance (it doesn't have to constantly poll the server).
When you make a change either on the client or on the server, that change is
replicated to the other. That's just the way HTTP accounts work and, for
Outlook at any rate, it can't be changed.
