My miscrosoft product key is "invalid" but it should be fine!

How do i know which version to uninstall from my computer? I recently bought
a new computer and it came installed with XP and as I was looking for Word
(For school work needs), I found it under :MIcrosoft office". That's where I
started hitting my problems. I had entered the trial key and it took, then it
wanted the product key and I finally found it on a sticker on the side of
the computer,
but then it wouldn't take it. I am so confused and ALL I want to do is create
a word document...HELP!
