My organizational chart feature tools are all greyed out.

How do I turn on this function. It has not been disabled by the safemode, it
just doesn't seem to be activated.

1. Version of Word

2. What, exactly, are you looking at that's "all greyed out"?

3. Assuming it's a toolbar, is the focus actually IN an organization chart?

Version is 2003
First I created some flowchart boxes using auto shapes and then tried to use
the connector and the connectors are greyed out. Then I tried to use the
feature on the drawing toolbar and it is greyed out meaning I am not able to
select even though I see it is there in a greyish color.

Connectors are only available when you're working in a "Drawing Canvas". This
sounds as if you're not using a Canvas. Try Insert/Picture/New Drawing and put
the autoShapes in that. Now the connectors should be available.

Yes this worked Cindy, thank you..... I had this feature turned off because
I really don't like seeing the drawing canvas....

Thanks,
Janet

Believe me, I know the feeling :)!

FWIW, if you need to have the option on for some reason,
but occasionally don't want the canvas, pressing ESC will
delete the canvas as soon as it's inserted by clicking a
Drawing tool.

Alternatively, you can disable the drawing canvas and insert one when you
need it by using Insert | Picture | New Drawing. This is the alternative I
prefer.
