thing--5 minutes is too short an interval. Make it no less than 10. You
should note that Hotmail will soon no longer be available through Outlook or
Outlook Express unless you pay a fee.

Your ISP probably provides a POP3 account for you. Hotmail is a HTTP
account. You can use a third party tool like HotmailPopper to have Hotmail
behave like a POP3 account.

rule for all received messages to display an alert - this works for Microsoft
Exchange where rules divert messages to other folders.
