Okay, I've just cracked open Word 2007. For the most part, what I've seen is
all good. The trashing of the file/edit/tools/etc. bar was no big deal
(especially after seeing it happen with both Windows Media Player 11 and IE
7). Most of the features I'm used to seeing are still there, and easier to
use through the new graphic interface, which I like very much.
I like the new SmartArt, Bibliography/Citation and Cover Page features.
Having the word count in the corner there is a nice treat. Most of the old
stuff, like tables, are easier to create than ever.
However, there is one issue I believe must be addressed: The page
measurement bars (at least I think that's what they're called). The page
measurement bars are absent. This is a very big flaw. They reappear
temporarily when resizing tables, but you need them for more than that. The
may seem obselete since tabs can be set in the paragraph setup box, but it's
pointless setting the tab to 2 inches if you don't know exactly where two
inches is on the page. Also, some people like to start a document at a
certain vertical point on the page, most often 1" or 2". With there being no
measurement bar, someone can't do that.
It may just be that the measurement bars haven't been programmed in yet for
anything other than tables. I hope that's the case. It would be a grave
mistake to leave them out. At school where we've been learning how to use
word, more often than not we have to start specifically at 2".
If the belief is that the measurement bars take up too much space, than at
least come up with a way to invoke them temporarily when setting tabs or when
setting a vertical starting point on the page.
Also, I have not found a way to record or edit macros, or access autotext.
However, I may just be missing something, or these features may not yet be
complete yet. I'm sure I won't have to worry about exclusion of those
features though.
On the whole, good job Microsoft. Just don't forget the essentials.
