My Word has gone bonkers

Many of the documents in "My Docs" that I use frequently have suddenly, with
no known action on my part, become "Read only". After changing one, I can't
save it without renaming it.

Others, when I close them, give me the message "This file is in use by
another application or user. C:\Windows\....\Templates\Normal.doc.". then I
get a "Save as" screen suggesting I save to "Normal" afollowed by the same
"C:\" message. When I cancel that I get the message, "Changes that have been
made affect the global template Normal, etc." Then I'm asked for Yes or No
answers that either bringing me around in a loop to where ZI started or kick
me out of the program. I never consciously made changes in any templates.

I'm also still having trouble opening files directly from "My Docs" as I
frequently get the message (not always) "Windows cannot find, etc." If I go
back to "My Docs", right click on the file and then click open it opens OK.
I'm using Word 2000.

Can anyone straighten me out? Thank you.

All of these problems are indicative of either a virus or a rogue add-in.
See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm for some
troubleshooting techniques. If you don't experience these problems when you
start Word in Safe Mode (using the /a switch or holding Ctrl while you
start), then you can start looking for problems with Normal.dot, the
Registry, or (most likely) an add-in. One of the most common troublemakers
is the Norton AntiVirus Office Plug-in, which can be safely disabled.
