my Word in Office 2004 won't come up because it says Office 2000

I use Word all the time. Suddenly just after I pull up a document a box
comes on saying I can't use Office 2004 because a version is already running
and I've exceeded the installations for this application..... I've closed
applications and restarted, forcequit Word (which would not quit otherwise).
What is going on? Any ideas?
