my word pdf reads strange in adobe reader: anounces punctuation

I have written a novel using microsoft word 2007, I have used word to make
my file into a pdf so that I can sell it online, when I open my pdf in adobe
reader it is announcing quotation marks and apostrophes. I thought it might
be the font so I used a common one: times roman. Does anyone have experience
making pdfs? how can I make one that will read normally like an e-book.
Everything else is reading as expected. Why is it reading quotation marks and
apostrophes. Other e-books don't do that. Is there somewhere to go that makes
perfect pdfs. I am using word and a microsoft ad in to make it. I am not
inclined to believe it is adobe reader because my purchased e-book reads
normally. thank you any advice on making perfect pdfs with word is
appreciated.

It was news to me too - and it is in Acrobat also :)

It appears to do much the same as
http://www.gmayor.com/word_text_to_speech.htm for Word.
As to the original problem - set the PDF option for ISO19005-1 compliance
and see if that sorts it out. Quotes and apostrophes (whether straight or
smart) should be read normally.

Hi, thank you all for responding. I am the original poster. One of the great
things about buying an e-book (PDF) is that the computer reads it for you!
(Text to speech) I am striving to make my e-book as perfect, entertaining,
and professional as possible, so I can't afford to have the original document
not work right. I tried the natural voice link and I was pleased it read as a
normal person might! thank you. Someone suggested to set my pdf for 1so
19005-1 compliance, I dont see yet where I have any option to do that.
Whatever software I have takes my file and automatically turns it into a pdf
from word and it comes up in adobe reader. I need to have adobe reader read
it well because this is the best known program or most common and that is
where most e-books show up for consumers I believe -he wrote.

Using Word 2007's own (downloadable from Microsoft) PDF creation tool, this
setting if on the 'save as ' dialog > options when PDF is the save option.

Also, note that it is ISO (iso, for International Standards Organization),
not 1so.

Only on this new system have I finally gotten an updated version of Reader.
I still had v. 5 on the old one because attempts to update kept failing, and
so I continued to read PDFs in Acrobat instead. On this new system I've been
very pleased with how much faster both Reader and Acrobat load and perform,
so that's a big plus.

I've read about a lot of people who complained how long it takes Reader to
load. I honestly don't think it's that bad. Maybe I don't value those few
moments as much as others.

Reader loads faster than Acrobat, but even Acrobat is a lot faster than it
used to be, and I have it set to allow me to see the first few pages of a
document before the entire thing is downloaded.

This behaviour may also depend on the computer voice that you use. I
know that the RealSpeak voices that I use often pronounce a ` as
'backquote'. In my text to speech application I do a preprocessing
step of converting all backquotes to simple ' quotes to get around
this problem.
