Mysteries of Microsoft Development

I'm using Office for Mac 2004 with all the updates to the present.

I have been a fanboy for Microsoft Office for both platforms, but I'm
beginning to wonder.

When using Word for Windows, the paragraph style menu is user
expandable. How convenient! Makes formatting long documents much
easier. The Windows developers must have thought it was a good idea.
However, they didn't tell the guys on the Mac side. On the Mac version
of Word, you are stuck with a tiny styles menu.

How is it that a feature thought to be worthy on one platform, doesn't
make it to the other platform? Useful is useful. No?

Want to clear hypertext links in the Windows version? Simple little key
command. It is a multi-step process in the Mac version.

How is it that a company that built its reputation with Excel and all
the sorting options it brings fall so short with Entourage.

How is that the sent time is incorrectly displayed in Entourage without
ever getting fixed? How did that remain intact after so many updates?
You have to got to View - Preview Pane - None to get the right time
stamp. CMD-\. The correct time IS there. Displaying it correctly in all
pane views never got fixed!

I'm an editor working with a large organization on a huge project. For
the most part, documents behave regardless of which platform created
them. However, for one set of documents, my work was crashing Windows
machines. Not just hooping Word, but crashing system software. A
Microsoft application chokes loading a Microsoft application document.
How is that even possible?

You know, there are large portions of Word that were developed long ago
when today's Word developers were still kids. I appreciate that to get
in there and dig around in all that is a big project. It is an elephant
that will never get touched. The future is in Web-based applications so
the issues I've described will never be resolved.

When it works, Office is great. When it breaks, and that happens with
greater frequency these days, it can be nasty and expensive in terms of
time spent debugging.

That off my chest, I return to work.

I use NeoOffice. It is pretty evident that Microsoft is trying to
sabotage the Mac platform by screwing up the most popular suite on the
planet. By doing that those who don't know better will think there's
nothing better about OSX and the next computer they buy will be a $500
Windows machine.
