Mysterious Background Activity in Word

All,

The solution has been identified. It is due to the latest
Brother Laser printer driver. In my case, it is the
latest version of the Brother HL-1440 driver. I removed
the printer, reloaded the original driver which came with
the printer (replacing an updated version obtained from
the brother website) and the problem has ceased.

Thanks to all who replied with this problem. I would
never has suspected the printer. I also don't recall
updating the driver.

with gratitude,

Good Grief! What the ???? are Brother up to! Does the driver have an HTML
interface for print management?

I'm glad you asked that because, in all my ignorance, I could not figure
out why a printer would cause his problem.

(Don't think I'll ever understand these things!)

I had the problems mentioned above with opening Word 2002, under Windows
XP - the hourglass cursor staying on the screen while flickering, slow
loading of documents, the whole bit.

I tried the various remedies suggested above. None worked until I tried
this, which did work:

I exited Word and did a search on my computer for the file named
"normal.dot." I found two, both apparently for MSWord. I changed the
name of the two files by altering the suffix. Then I reloated Word.
Problem was gone.

Apparently something in the normal.dot template had become corrupted.
