mysterious line!

Yikes! I work with airline manuals in Word. For some
reason a line has appeared below the Table of Contents and
the text is now on the next page. If I view it
in "Normal" view, the text will come up, but I cannot seem
to get rid of the line (it doesn't say "page break") and
is just a fine line all the way across the page. I've
tried to cut and past to other documents and this little
problem defaults back to other documents. I've rebooted
and tried several remedies.

Can anyone help? THANK YOU in advance!

You've run into AutoFormat as You Type. What the dashes changed to is a
paragraph border. Put your insertion point (cursor) on the line just before
the solid line and use Format => Borders and Shading... to remove the bottom
border. Make sure that the drop down in the lower right corner of the dialog
box says "paragraph" and not "page."

Hope this helps. For more on these phenomena see

This is a "soft" page break. Check the paragraphs following the TOC to see
whether they are formatted as "Page break before" or "Keep with next."
