Name objects

Is it possible to assign a name to shapes/objects on a slide?
"rectangle 27" and "group 34" isn't as helpful as "Start button" or "Red
logo".

In 2007 you can (using the selection pane) In earlier versions it can only be
done with vba code and even then the name in the animation pane will be
unchanged.
