named external intersecting cell reference

Hi there.
I have a workbook "ingredients" with a named column
("unitcost") and named rows (eg "flour", "sugar"). Within
that workbook I can use names of intersecting cells fine
(eg "unitcost sugar"). However I can't seem to use those
intersecting references from another workbook, for example:
"ingredients.xls!unitcost sugar". Is this possible, or
will I have to use VLOOKUP?
Hope someone can help.

Although there may be other ways to do it, VLOOKUP seems to work just fine.
