Naming Worksheets

I've added some worksheets to an excel file. The problem is that when I
rename any of the sheets the following appears before the characters in the
name: .xls] e.g. if I call the sheet TEST, it immediately adjusts to
..xls]TEST.

What is this ? and is there so way I can turn it off?

Make sure that the file name doesn't contain any of those square brackets.

Close the file and use windows explorer to rename it.
