Nav button and link aren't working

I built a simple website for my dad's business using Pub 2007. It was
working fine for quite a while and now none of the navigation buttons or
links are working and the banner at the top isn't showing.

The only thing I can think of that might be causing it is IE8. When I
initially published the site, IE8 hadn't been released yet and ever since, it
has been doing this. The only thing that makes me think that it is not IE is
the fact that I also tried opening it using foxfire and the same thing
happens except that the banner at least shows in foxfire.

I've searched the forum and seen some similar issues. I've tried
"ungrouping" the Nav box, as per one suggestion I saw, but that still didn't
solve the problem.

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

Install the Office 2007 SP2:

Reference: Description of 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 2 (SP2)
and of Microsoft Office Language Pack 2007 SP2:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=953195

If that does not fix your problem, did you put the navbar and/or the banner
on a Master Page? If so, don't use the Master Page...put everything on the
main page.

Still no joy? Post the URL to your site.

David,

Thanks for the help but I already have both of those updates. I checked
what you mentioned about the master page and I do not have anything on the
master.

The URL to the site is http://www.inhousemachining.com

It displays differently in IE and Firefox.

Hope you can help!

Thanks!

Like Spike, I find myself wondering if you really do have SP2 installed.
Open Publisher and go to Help > About Publisher. If you installed the Office
2007 SP2, then it should say so.

Assuming that you do have SP2 installed, then you are still suffering from
the effects of grouping. If you load your home page in IE7 you get the
vertical navbar and your banner image, but neither render in IE8. In
FireFox the vertical navbar renders but it does not work...it has been
converted into an image as has all the text. Furthermore the bottom navbar
does not work in FF, which also implies that it has not been ungrouped. So
you can try a couple things.

I would first of all try to manually ungroup everything on the home page. Go
to Edit > Select All and then to Arrange > Ungroup. Don't save the changes
yet, but go ahead and try to preview the page in IE8. Does the vertical
navbar render and work now? How about the banner image? If this fix works,
then once again this suggests that SP2 was not successfully installed or for
some reason did not fix the grouping problem. You may need to ungroup each
page manually if the SP2 did not work for some reason. Try Publish to the
Web, direct your files to your local computer and then test that page with
FF before you save the changes.

If still no joy then the fact that all the text and navbars have been
converted to an image for FF, suggests that either all those items are
grouped together, or the fill color is causing it. I can't quite figure out
how you have layered everything on your page, but try removing the gradient
fill color and test your site again. Gradient fill colors can result in text
boxes being converted to images. You can see that your text is an image by
trying to left click and drag to select the text and you can't when it is an
image. Amway, try removing the gradient and see if that makes a difference.
You may need to use a different color fill or layer a text box without fill
on top of a filled box to get the same effect. I can explain in more detail
if interested...

Post back with your results.

David,

I checked to make sure that I had SP2 installed and I do. Next I removed
the gradient background on all pages and re-published. I cleared all cookies
and cache and then I checked how it displayed in bot FF and IE and both are
still displaying the site with the gradient.

It is hard to understand how the site still has the gradient if you actually
removed it. Did you remove it from the fill in the text box in addition to
the background?

I am not sure what is going on. It sounds like some things are still grouped
together as that is the only reason known for the banner and the navbar to
not render in IE8. Did you try to ungroup the whole page manually? Did you
try just ungrouping the banner?

At this point I guess I would suggest making a backup file, and then start
deconstructing your page. There apparently is something with your layout
and/or design that is causing these problems, and deconstructing the page
and rebuilding it one design element at time is probably the best way to
find the problem(s). Remove fills and backgrounds, manually ungroup and
unlayer the different design elements and break the page down to the basic
text boxes, navbars and banners until you can find why all the text is being
converted to an image in FF and some of the components are not rendering in
IE8. Once you get the basic page working correctly, you can add back the
different design elements one at a time, testing as you go, to determine
what is creating the problems.

Alternatively if you upload your Publisher file to www.yousendit.com and
then come back and post the link to the file at yousendit then I and others
can download and trouble shoot it for you. yousendit is free and you do not
have to sign up for anything. I have used it many times without a problem.
In this case the obvious fixes don't appear to be enough, and I need to see
how you have built your pages in order to help further.

It sounds like the OP has not updated the server as it looks the same as it
did a few days ago. I am wondering if the changes are on the HD only.
