NAV Virus Scan for Word Documents

In the recent SNAFU involving NAV/Verisign, one of the popular suggestions
was to uncheck the Word plug-in in NAV.
I had not really noticed the "Requesting Virus Scan" at the bottom of Word
Docs until it suddenly became so slow.
My question is whether this is really necessary in any case.
I have an automatic full system scan every week.
All of my documents are created by me, and if I should ever receive one from
someone else, I would scan it before opening it.
I have set Word's security settings to not allow any documents that contain
macros.
Documents load noticeably faster with that function turned off.
Is there a compelling reason to turn it back on again?

I personally don't think it's necessary to keep scanning your own
documents when you scan the incoming docs. Document viruses don't get
manufactured out of thin air (yet).

There is no need for this plug-in. It duplicates effort already applied
elsewhere, and has a great propensity for causing problems. Leave it off.

I'll second what Graham said. Not only is there no compelling reason for
reenabling it, there are plenty of reasons to leave it disabled: sometimes
it seems like half the problems presented in these NGs are caused by
conflicts between Word and that plug-in!

proved valid.
