Navigating Mactopia Forums ?

S

Simon_J.A._Simpson

So, I'm trying to navigate the new Mactopia forums and having some difficulty. My apologies if I'm just being a bit stupid here.

Q1: How can I get a simple list of posts to display, from the most recent to the last - à la the old style forums ?
Q2: How can I get search results to display in reverse date order ?

And, more philosophically…
Q3: If a post remains unanswered for more than even a short time it disappears from the default view of "Most Popular: Newest Answers: Newest Questions" since only five "Newest Questions" are ever displayed.
Surely this means that if a new question is not answered straight away, or there is a rush of new questions, then it will never get a response since it effectively disappears from the display on the forum ?

I would be most grateful for some answers assuming, of course, that this question remains up long enough for someone to see it and respond !

Hi Simon,

Down at the bottom of the site, in the footer, there is a teeny Website
Feedback link. Will you please use it to send MS that feedback? Copy and
paste should get the point across fine.

You are not being stupid at all. The people who designed the forums
(subcontracted out by MS), well, that's another matter. Difficult to
tell what they were thinking, exactly.

Q1. Sorry, can't.
Q2. Sorry, can't.

The old forums, on Google groups, are still there, and offer
chronological listings and sorted searches.

Re Q3--after a post vanishes from the 5 Newest Questions, that person
might still be fine. Many people are reading through Google, many people
are reading through newsreaders, so all those people will still see the
questions. Mactopia is just one of many portals to the news server that
holds all the questions and answers. Apparently the forum designers
thinks people who read through Mactopia do not answer questions, only
ask them, and thus created a self-fulfilling prophecy by making it
nearly impossible for people using Mactopia to help others.

Forget the Mactopia interface. This is a NNTP newsgroup. This is not a web
forum. You can use the Entourage newsreader or any third party newsreader to
access this group. You can download old messages for search. In Entourage
2008 you can use the Entourage Spotlight search to easily find what you
want. Just like email you can sort by oldest, newest or whatever you want.
