navigation bar

The top vertical navigation bar on my website is fine, but on some of the
pages the bottom horizontal navigation bar (i.e. the one which is at the
bottom of the page) is overlapping text and pictures on the page. I have
tried deleting it and re-inserting it but when I do a Web Page Preview it
still appears over text / pictures.
It is fine on most of the pages, it's just two pages where it is not
positioned correctly. How do I make sure it is like it is on the other pages
i.e. correct position? TIA.

Please post a link to the pages where you are having the problem, tell us
what version of Publisher you are using, what browser and which version.
Also right click your desktop > properties > settings > advanced and tell me
whether your display settings are at 96 dpi or 120 dpi.

Hi David, I am using MS Pub 2007. The display settings are 96dpi. Darn, I
deleted what I'd uploaded because of the errors so I unfortunately can't give
you a link.
First of all, the problem arose only when I viewed Web Page Preview in
Firefox (which I downloaded about 2 months ago). It was fine in MS Win Exp
(not sure which version?). Now, it displays fine in Firefox but the problem
has switched to Windows Explorer.

The best I can do without seeing the pages is to guess...

Run the Design Checker under Tools and see if that gives you any insight.

In case you are tying to use word wrap around an image, that does not work
in a Publisher web publication.

Make sure you are using a web font. Select your text box > Format > Font and
make sure the Show only Web fonts is checked and that you are using one of
them. Non web fonts will render inconsistently.

IE and FF will render some fonts slightly different size even with they are
web fonts. You just have to tweak your layout to accommodate those
differences. That means you might need to move the navbar down a bit on the
page so that it is not overlapped. You can use the nudge feature...or the
arrow keys to do this.

If none of this leads to a solution then perhaps you can upload the site
again, at least temporarily, and provide the links to the pages where you
are having the problems. It is just really hard sometimes to tell people how
to fix something without being able to see it.

Hi David,
I ended up having to delete the bottom navbar on the 2 affected pages and
reinstall them differently. They are now in the correct position in both FF
and IE.

My next problem is, in FF I cannot click on the lower navbars and go to the
relevant page(s). It works in IE, but not FF. In other words, when I place
the cursor on any given page on the bottom navbar, it does not become a
finger cursor, and I cannot click on it to open the page. Any idea why this
might be? many thanks.

Be sure to install the Office 2007 SP2. This will fix rendering problems
with IE8.

To fix the bottom navbars, select the navbar on each page > Arrange >
ungroup. The navbars will work in FF then.

Anytime you have a hyperlink not work in a text box, check to see if that
text box has been converted to an image when you convert the page to
html...that will kill the link. You can sometimes convert a text box into an
image by grouping it with other elements, by using "fancy" borders, and
sometimes by using some fill colors. The workaround is usually to create a
second text box with those fancy borders and/or fills and putting them
behind the main, plain text box. You go to the Arrange menu to send to the
back, etc. You get the same effect but the main text box will not be
converted to an image thus killing your links.

You rock, David!!! Thanks so much, working perfectly now! This was the last
sticking point I had before I get the site up and running. Phew. Thanks so
much.
