Need CALS now for 2007?

Hello,

I've been running MS Oiffce on my terminal server for about 4 years,
upgrading when new releases came out. I bought 2007 Standard Edition and
loaded to the term server no problem. However when I try to come in to the
term server and run office it basically tells me that I have to get licenses.

What do I need to get? Where do I get it? My Term server is also my
License server so do I just add some Office CALS or something?

Thanks,

Russ

Hi Russ,

I'm assuming you're using a volume licensed version of MS Office 2007? Retail and OEM copies are blocked from working on Terminal
Server.

If you have a volume license key/edition what is the procedure you used to install Office 2007 to Terminal Server?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for replying. That's just it. In the past all I ever did was grab a
copy of MS Office, load it on the term server and everything was fine. This
time I grabbed a copy of Standard Edition, loaded it on to term server and I
can't get the silly thing to work. Is there yet another version of MS Office
that I need to procure, or do I simply buy CALS to add to the version I
already have? I can't find any info on what I'm supposed to do on the MS
site.

Thanks again,

RB

Can anybody help me on this one? I'd like to take advantage of the slower
holiday work times to change over my term server to 2007.

Thx

Hi Russ,

I'm not clear on what information you're looking for. MS Office 2007 retail or OEM editions do not work on Terminal Server. You
need a volume license (enterprise) edition http://office.microsoft.com/suites and a volume license product key to go with it.

I think you are giving me the answer. My hesitation is that I bought
Standard Edition, loaded to term server and ran into problems. My network
person called the software vendor who supposedly in turn talked to Microsoft
to find out what was necessary to get things to work. We were told that the
Standard Edition product would in fact work fine, but that I needed to buy
CALS for it. I lost the detail info I had written down so I posted here to
try to confirm things. Sounds like you are saying they gave me bad
information, that in fact the Standard Edition will not work. Is your
confidence high? If so I'll purchase the volume license edition and just
load the Standard Edition to my home pc.

Thank very much for your help.

Hi Russ,

There is a volume licensed Office 2007 Standard Edition available, but it sounds like the one you have is not? If your firm has a
MS Volume License (http://microsoft.com/licensing) then they should be able to obtain the correct product/license for you to use it
on Terminal Server. It's not a retail product.

Bob,

Maybe I'm making this more difficult than it need me. All I have to do is
buy the Volume Licensed office 2007, otherwise knows as Enterprise edition of
Standard edition. I install that on my term server and I'm good to go
because I already have 5 CALS running on that box. Is that correct?

That sounds easy. What confuses me is why did MS change the way Office is
set up so that they now have a volume license version? Since the CALS
control how many people access the box it seems redundant to me to have two
different flavors of Office.

Thanks,

Russ

Hi Russ,

MS Office has had volume license keys for several versions that provide additional features to the corporate customer base that
aren't as readily available in the end user base. My guess is that they use of Terminal Server clients is thought to be something
you'd see more in a company rather than standalone end user environment, but it's just a guess :)

The CALS (licenses) for Terminal Server itself (that may be required) would be separate from the Office 2007 volume license keyed
product.

Thanks Bob. To be clear on this last point though, all I need to do is buy
the volume license version of Office and that's it, yes? I buy this special
new flavor of Office and install that one software product. From then on the
only thing I have to do to allow additional users access to it is to purchase
additional Terminal Server CALS. When purchasing the volume license version
it doesn't matter whether I'm going to connect 2 people or 200 as that is all
handled by how many terminal server CALS are installed. Yes?

Thanks so much.
