need help with conditional formula

select the cell (assume it's A1 you want to colour and A2 with the values,
do format conditional formatting, formula is

=$A$1=1

click format>patterns and select colour 1, click add and use

=$A$1=2

repeat..

It's called conditional formatting. It can be found in the
Help or by using it -- Format->Conditional Formatting.

You can set up to three conditions per conditional format.
For example, Condition 1 you'd choose "Cell Value Is"
"equal to" and then the cell2 reference. Click the format
button and select a color.
