Need to find product ID

S

solarman1

I had a robbery a few days ago. My computers were stolen as well as the
binder that I keep all of my original software CDs and product IDs. I have a
backup copy of my hard drive. When I cut/copy the "Office" file from the
backup to the tepm. version I have on the main drive, it doesn't copy my
registration information. How can I get all of my registared files copied to
the operating hard drive? And how can I get my Outlook contact and folders to
copy to the same?
I will get a new copy when the insurance company pays, but I need to work
now, PLEASE help!

The Product ID is not generated until you install
Microsoft Office. The Product ID is not the
25-character Product Key used to install Office with.
Neither the Product Key nor Product ID is stored
in the Office CD or a copy you may have made.

Did your Office software come preinstalled on your computer or did you
purchase it separately?

(I'm glad to hear you have insurance. So many people don't and when
something like this happens, they are SOL.)

I understand what the number is. I have an installed version on a backup USB
hard drive. When my computer was stolen, I put together a small computer and
installed a copy of a MS Office 2003 Trial set that I had in hopes that I
could transfer this copy from the other USB drive and my licence would come
with the copy. This didn't work. Now my trial version is out of date and I
need my office suite. How can I get this to operate?

Dear Joann,
No, I purchased it seperately. Here is the situation. When my office was
robbed, they took my computers and the binder that I kept my software Cds in.
What they didn't take was a USB hard drive that I had backed up my computer
onto. I built a cheap machine and installed a copy of Office 2003 Trial
software thinking that I could copy the registared version from the USB back
up drive along with my files. For some reason the is not working to
"activate" the trial bversion. Now the trial version is out of time and I
NEED to get my office suite running so that I can work. Once I get my
insurance money, I will purchase another copy, but I cannot afford to now.
Can you help me get this to work?

You can *try* contacting MS.
How to obtain a new product key for Office program setup
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823570

Explain the situation to them. I don't know if you can use your retail
product key with a trial version but it's worth asking.

Why have your insurance company fork out $500 when you might be able to
replace it for less money?

Thank you for your reply. I have spent hours on the phone with MS and have
gotten no where. It seems that the back up copy is a copy from another copy
of the operating system and will not run on another. In addition they know of
no way or they won't tell me how to get the Product ID from the file menu.

It looks like you're going to have to wait until the insurance company cuts
that check. And this time, you need to make a back up copy with the product
key and keep it in a secure location.
