Need to stop the beep when opening/closing files in MS Word

Sig2340

I am running Office Professional 2003 and Windows XP Professional on an IBM
T60.

Whenever I select "file" then "open" or “close†or “save as†or “save as web
page†in MS Word, there is a very loud, high pitched beep lasting about 2
seconds.

It only happens when using any of these functions in Word. It does not
happen when using these functions in other Office applications like
PowerPoint or Excel or when opening or closing files in non-Microsoft
applications. The beep even overrides music CD or mp3 playback, and happens
every time I select one of these functions.

It is driving me nuts.

I have tried:

1. Turning off the "provide feedback with sound" option under "Tools"
"Options" "General" in Word. No effect.

2. Turning off all system sounds using "Control Panel" "Sounds and Audio
Devices." Doing this killed all sounds, but not this [expletive deleted]
beep.

3. Searching for all types of sound files, then listening to them one by
one hoping to find (and then delete) the [expletive deleted] beep file. No
luck.

The only thing I have found that turns this sound off is disabling the
speakers, either by turning them off using the volume button on the keyboard
or by selecting “Mute all†in the “Master Volume†window.

Does anyone have any idea how to disable this sound without disabling all
audio playback features?

If you hold down CTRL when starting Word, to put it into Safe Mode, does the "beep" go
away?

I have the same exact problem, except my *&$^& beep shows up when MS-Word
corrects a typo. I have gone through the exact same debug steps as listed
below. And when I start up in Safe mode this doesn't stop the noise. It is
almost deafening with earbuds in. So I am very interested in finding a
solution.

Any other suggestions?

On the General tab of Tools | Options, do you have the box checked for
"Provide feedback with sound"?

Suzanne,
Thanks for trying to be helpful. But as you can see in the initial posting,
this is the very first thing that we both tried. I'm afraid this is more
sneaky than that!

Windows > Control panel > Sounds And Audio Devices > Sounds > delete any
sound associations that offend and save the result as a new scheme.

Graham,
Thanks for trying to help. But as you can see from the initial posting,
this has already been tried. I even rebooted after I changed the sound
scheme to "No SOunds" and checked every single association for a sound.

Any other suggestions?

It's beginning to sound (so to speak) like this might be a corrupted
registry issue, as your sound settings are being ignored. What happens if
you create a new Windows user profile? Does the same thing occur for a new
user?
