Nested table: outer cell needs extra line at bottom??

I have a large table; some of the cells have nested tables in them.
If the nested table is the last item in the cell, the cell code (the
asterisk-like symbol analogous to the paragraph-mark code, tab-mark
code, etc.) apparently has to be on its own line, below the nested
table. If I backspace from the bottom of the cell, this blank line
disappears, only to reappear at random later on. The cell code
doesn't really go up a line; it stays on its own line, which
temporarily gets hidden (I think). I have the table barely fitting on
the page, so this glitch can ruin the pagination.

The only solution I've found is to put the cursor to the left of this
cell code and set the line spacing to Exactly 0.7. (I'd rather it be
0, but that's impossible.) Is this basically the only way to ensure
that the blank line at the bottom more or less disappears? Thanks.
