Nesting field codes

I'm looking for pointers on how to nest one field code inside a second. I
want the page number field code to include the volume number, so that every
reference of any page number is preceded by its volume number. Something like
this:

Vol I: 4, Vol III: 78, Vol IV: 15

How do I tweak a field code and merge it with another?
