Network performance advise

John

Hi

Would it make much difference to the performance of an access app if the
network the app is running on is upgraded from 100Mbps to 1Gbps (Cat6)?

Thanks

Access doesn't really support working across the network.
If you want to fully embrace the latest in networking tech (like WAN,
VPN, Wireless or even GB _BIGFRAMES_) then yah-- you'd better move to
SQL Server.

Access hasn't had a single (important) bug fix in a decade.

Hard to say without knowing more.

100mbps can be just fine but it has to do with your netwrok saturation. If
you have low saturation then you should be just fine, if on the other hand,
your network is saturated, then upgrading can have a significant impact on
performance.

When we upgraded, I stopped having random record corruption occuring and
certain action improved. It has alot to do with network load not just
100mbps vs 1Gbps.

Ultimately if you have access to 1Gbps then get onboard, if can't hurt.

You have to ask yourself:
Are you experiencing any problems with your app do to Network issues?

This will dictate the answer to your question. You can also use networking
tools to analyze you network traffic to see how it is utilized this could
help as well.

And if you want to move to SQL Server Aaron has most graciously volunteered
to pay for the price difference, between SQL Server and Access in order to
get people upgraded, because he feels so strongly about it and keeps on
harping on and on and on and on and on and on and on...

So Sorry For Poor Aaron

Access works very nicely across networks using a variety of techniques.
Aaron is too dense to understand this, and persists in proliferating invalid
claims such as these.
Access hasn't had a single (important) bug fix in a decade.

Just another Aaronic attempt to denigrate Access... a decade would be 1998,
since which Access 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2007 have been released. With the
possible exception of 2002/2003 which had little difference in function, but
2003 had big improvements in Help, each was a "significant" release.

Maybe it's all the bugs crawling around inside Aaron's head that keep him
divorced from reality.

Here's a little reality therapy for you, Aaron: Big Bruce, Big Bubba, and
Big Barney "think you are so cute in orange" and are really eager to have you
back with them in the cellblock. They don't mind that you have a head full
of bugs.

Poor, poor pitiful little Aaron. He just can't seem to stand being on the
outside.

the only thing that Access is-- is a front end to SQL Server

anyone stupid enough to use Access as a _DATABASE_ should be fired and
then spit upon

you are rubbish Tony.

You blame it on 'the VPN'
You blame it on 'the WAN'
You blame it on 'the Wireless'
You blame it on 'the PUBLIC INTERNET BEING TOO SKINNY'

But the _FACTS_ state that SQL Server -- and ADP-- work great over all
four mediums.

Sounds to me like the problem _IS_ the database, not the network
and thus 'Access doesn't really support working across the network. '
is a perfectly true statement.

What.. did you want me to say THIS instead?
Access doesn't really support working across 4 out of 5 networks.

Is that better, does the almight Tony (little scared baby chipmunk)

Why don't you back it up with some URLs, you little wussy canadian?
