Network Places Problem?

M

Mike T.

Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend running FP 2002 under XP Home. Here's the
problem:

He can't open a web using File > Open Web. The only way he can is by going
to File > Recent Webs. I did a Remote Support call for him, poked around,
and couldn't find anything obvious, even after comparing to my setup (which
works fine).

Going into "My Network Places", no web folders appear whatsoever. He says
they were there before. When I try to add a new one, I get an error message
saying that the address is not valid. He's not running any servers on the
local machine.

Any ideas?

TIA,
Mike

Hi Mike,

The web being opened is a disk based web ? Server based webs are not allowed on XP Home.
Mike,

Thanks for responding.
I'm not 100% clear on this, but here goes:

The webs were originally listed in My Network Places, but now they're gone
and I can't create/save new ones. These webs are on a server at the hosting
company. They're still sitting up there, so no problem on that end.

I have the identical setup here OS-wise, and everything is where it's
supposed to be (in fact, I have a Home box and a Pro box and I have no
problem in either one; both HTTP and FTP folders are there). The web folders
in question have as their icons a folder with a globe in the middle and a
little line at the bottom designating a network connection.

The only difference network-wise is that he has only the one computer, while
I have a 3-node network connected with a hub and using ICS. Firewall-wise,
he uses ICF while I use ZoneAlarm.

Trying to add a network folder (http://www.(thewebsite).de), I get the error
that it is not a valid address. I can still add an FTP site. I can't
understand why the web folders were there up until a couple of days ago and
now they're gone. Also, how will my friend be able to work on his websites
(some of which I work on from here as well)?

Thanks,
Mike T.

You should not have to create a network folder.

With ZA completely disabled, open the site in question in IE, then use File Menu | Edit with FP,
this should create the network folder.

He can open his web by opening FrontPage and then Selecting File > Open Web...
( Open Site... if using FP 2003 )
and entering the full URL.

Hi Steve,

Unfortunately, he can't. I'm also running his box remotely and I see it. I
went through the steps in KB287402 without success. The only way at all to
open the web in FP is through File > Recent Webs. He's SOL on the ones that
don't show up on that list.

When I go File > Open Web, I get an open file dialog that defaults to My
Network Places, which is empty. I type the address in the bar, and get the
message "The folder 'http://www....' isn't accessible. The folder may be
located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the
filename contains a / or \."

When I try to add a network place with the wizard, either with the site's
name or numerical IP address, I get "The folder you entered does not appear
to be valid. Please choose another."

This happens with any website I try. I've successfully pinged all of them,
and reached the sites in IE. I tried to open as a web folder in IE, but that
didn't work either.

I can, however, add an FTP site without problems. I also did a search and
deleted all files with *.web.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

I've been using it for years, and NO problems.

| As a workaround, you might try Jimco's free addin Open Web; Jimco Open Web
| adds a menu item to the File menu in FrontPage that will bypass Web
Folders
| when opening Webs. This add-in can be used if Web Folders are not working
on
| your system to allow you to continue using FrontPage.

Unfortunately, this method only allows you to open and
edit that particular page in FP, and does not add the root
web address to network places.

I am having the same problems on a Windows 2000 Pro box
with FP2002. I can open some of my websites but not
others using the 'Open Web' menu item and keying in the
correct URL. I do not believe the problem is related to
FrontPage extensions because I can open the website using
the same version of FP on another computer. It seems
there may be a component missing from the local computer
that is causing this to happen.
