network shares - Word 2003 documents

Has anyone had issues with Word 2003 taking an
exceptionally long time opening documents on Network
shares?

I've done testing, no issues with connectivity to the
server or with the workstation's networking that Word is
installed on. Permissions are the same as other users on
the network.

I've tried several Word fixes, also tried the new SP3
patch for Office 2003.

Was wondering if it could possibly be a profile issue?

Any ideas, folks?

Probably a profile issue as any problems opening DOCs across the network
with W2k3 were sorted many moons ago. Have your tried creating a new test
profile and see if that has similar issues?

Terry,

I actually tried it under my login...same issue. Tried
it with the local administrator account and mapped a
drive to the server, and opened the document...same issue.

No idea what is causing this...

I'd eliminate the network point first: try seeing how long it takes to
download a large file across the network and see if its performance is OK.
If you are confident that the network and NIC are OK, then try opening Word
using the /a switch to see if that makes any difference. (The /a switch
starts Word in its default install mode bypass all add-ins or custom macros,
etc.)

Use Start, Run and type in

winword /a

and press enter. This will launch Word. Test to see if that has changed how
long it takes to open documents. Also, if there is AV on the WS, try
temporarily disabling the AV to make sure it is working correctly.
