New behavior - formatting changes everything!

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

Just recently (maybe after the latest update??) when I apply a format to a single line of a document, the entire document changes to the new format. Then I hit undo and the rest of the doc goes back to normal and I get what I wanted in the first place. It's very annoying and time consuming.

It is happening with font sizes & weights, indents, maybe others but those are the main things.

Did I get a virus or is this a new "feature?"

No, it's not a virus But somehow - not necessarily the update - your
working in a style that's set to Automatically Update. When you make a
change in formatting all paras formatted in that style change accordingly.
