My laptop, to which I had installed Microsoft Office on, died and I had to
get a new one. Microsoft Office cost me hundreds of dollars and it won't
activate on my new computer. What do you do in this case? Except spend
hundreds more on Microsoft Office again?

Activation does not depend on how much you have spent on the product.
Online Activation depends on how many times you have installed a
particular product.

Having said so, when you try to activate select to use the telephone
method and you will be given toll free numbers to contact MS office in
your country. Explain to them (without being rude or aggressive) and
they will activate for you.

If, however, the product is OEM version then you will have to contact
the company where you bought your computer from or the store where you
bought the office OEM product from.

Alright, thank you.

How do I tell though if I have the OEM version? What is an OEM version?

If your copy of Office came preinstalled on your old laptop by
the computer manufacturer, then it's an OEM version. An OEM copy
of Office cannot be transferred to another computer. When the
original computer dies, so does the Office license. That's one
reason why OEM copies of Office cost much less than retail copies
of Office.

If you purchased your copy of Office from a conventional or
online retailer and installed it yourself, then hopefully you
knew whether you were looking at a retail copy or an OEM copy
before you plunked down your hundreds of dollars.
