New doc opens as narrow, unalterable column

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Power PC When I open a new doc, all I see is a fancy background and a narrow column I can't widen or alter. What's up.

And, now that I look at it, the ruler across the top doesn't extend past the 1.5 inch mark.

Someone has been playing with your Normal.dotm template. Could that have
been "you"? :)

Find your normal.dotm template and delete it. Word must be quit when you do
that.

Cheers

Tried it, John. Still having the problem. Wish I could send you a screen capture. This occurred right out of the box, by the way.

When you installed did you go through the Updating? Confirm that Office is
at 12.2.3 rather than whatever base version installed from the source
disk... Have a look in Word> About Word. Also, make sure that your flavor of
OS X and your printer driver are fully updated.

No such luck, Bob. My word version is 12.2.3; my PowerPC runs 10.4.11. I'm not hooked up to any printers at the moment, though I see I have two I don't recognize (I inherited this Mac from a co-worker. The weird part of all of this is that I can't seem to alter the width of the page. When I try to change the margins, I get a message that says I have to set them between .1 and 22: they are set at the defaults.

Ah! You "Inherited" that machine from a co-worker :)

That's the missing bit we needed.

Log on as Administrator, create a brand new login for yourself, and delete
his. Lots of things will change: and Office should work properly :) I
would guess that the system has some very strange preferences as a result of
the settings he was using.

....but was *any* version of Office previously installed on that Mac? If so
it may not have been properly removed which could easily account for such a
problem -- especially if you're using the same User Account as the former
individual. Try John's recommendations which should resolve such a case.

If you continue to have difficulties reply with details.

Good Luck |:>)
