new document

When I try to make a new document, I click on 'file', 'new' and it takes me
to the screen which askes what type of document I want to create. I click
'blank document', but one of my wife's previous document comes up. I assume
that she somehow made this into a template, but I can't get rid of it. I
cannot create a blank document! Help!!
