New file/ startup issue

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have the workbook file - no extension, saved as a template in the startup folder. I changed the view. But it does not stick. A new default come up for file new. What doing wrong? thanks!
