New install of Office 2000 and now word documents are scrambled

Help!

I just replaced my old Windows 98 machine with a new computer running XP. I
loaded my copy of Office 2000 on it. Install was fine and smooth. I installed
all of the components. Many of my documents created on the old machine (and
were backed up successfully on CD-RW's) open OK on the new computer, but many
more do not. They open all scrambled. Example:

@.? ™èˆÔý@âuÂd½þµÂ#ÉpÅ¡Bæ—–ö¿]OS…TÅ’e•&’÷åTß ¢è74Ëœ'
ã ¤¯-5å̤\€–`ÞαÌiö-Õ×ç¾µíïaׄUöç÷Î?
˜‘ýÆ’î?Ū7:/FPjödáф;¹Þâ=W¹ûm‹þVËÿ¨ïL#‡zî€æ^óÃ
ÇÖµÖ‡÷«O&'±‹ÄÎÂéÂóÂ[.öÇåz Äí

There must be some settings somewhere that need changing, or some add-on
utility I'm missing in order to get these docs to open and display properly.

Observation: It seems that the docs that don't respond proper may very
likely contain things like hyperlinks, charts, pictures, or html objects, but
not necessarily...

Anyone have suggestions on why some docs won't open correctly?

It's not. It's set to "All File Types". When I try to open one of the
scrambled documents, a Convert File dialog box pops up. I've tried opening
the documents with all of the choices available in the Convert File dialog
and none of them work...

That would indicate that the documents seem to have been corrupted when they
were written to CD. I suggest that you ask someone else with Word to have a
look and see if they can confirm the corruptions.

I trust you're not trying to open the documents directly from the CD? If so,
try copying them to the HD first. But if they were "saved" to the CD instead
of copied using CD-burning software, there's a good chance they used a
proprietary format that requires the CD software to open.

Suzanne,

No, no, I know better than that… and thanks for helping me here…

Of course, I copied the documents from the CD-RW to the hard drive on the
new machine before trying to open them; but you do raise an interesting point
– I believe that when periodically backing up My Documents on the old
machine, I did do just a “copy†and “paste†to the CD-RW rather than
(properly) using the CD-burning software when backing up. You could be on to
something here - this may be the most likely insight to my problem that I've
heard yet.

…I’m thinking of loading the CD-RW burning software that is used on the old
machine onto the new one, but that probably won’t help…I think I need to use
the CD burning software to correctly migrate My Documents from the old
machine to the new one; But, since the “old†machine is screwed up, this may
be impossible… which brings me to the problem that got me in this mess in the
first place – Windows 98 decided it didn’t want to launch anymore and at the
boot I get a DOS prompt that says “ ERROR LOADING KERNELL – RE-INSTALL
WINDOWSâ€

Well, believe me, as much as I would love to reload windows, I can’t. The
machine (an HP) was not sold with a Windows disk. Just a System Recovery disk
which is useless, because, guess what? Windows won’t launch and the Emergency
boot diskette isn’t being seen during the boot process! Hello! Arrgh!!! I
can’t even get it into Safe Mode…

(Hence, the reason I had to buy a new machine! - but I really need to get
at those documents created on the old one – anyway that I can…)

I would bet that someone somewhere can tell you what you need to know to get
the old computer to boot. You might try HP Support for a start. I'm afraid
*I* don't know enough to help you, though there are doubtless other regulars
in this forum who do. If you're getting far enough to get an error message
I'd say that's a good sign.

What I was suggesting wrt the CD-burning software is this: My CD software
(Adaptec Easy CD Creator) gives me the option to use DirectCD, which allows
me to treat a CD like a floppy and save files directly to it, or to use the
software to select multiple files to be copied to the CD all at once. I
always use the latter option, but I have a client who evidently uses the
former. At first when he would bring me CDs (before I had a CD burner), I
would just get an error message when I tried to open his files; after I got
the CD burner and software, I noticed that when I open his files, they are
being opend by DirectCD. This is why I suggested that it might be necessary
to have the CD creation software on the new computer. I have no idea whether
this would help or not; it was just a thought.

Hi Mark,

To try to get to the files on the old computer without being able to
run Windows, you need a boot disk, preferably with a driver for your
CD drive. There are lots of places on the 'Net to get software and
instructions for creating a boot disk, notably www.bootdisk.com and
www.startdisk.com.
