New instances of Word 97 when opening a doc

Hello,
Using Office 97 - For some reason when I open a document
from say explorer, it always opens a new instance of Word.
I know that is by default in Office 2000, but I have never
seen this happen with 97. Has anyone else seen this? Any
suggested fixes?? I can live with this, but it is bugging
me.

Thank you!

It suggests that the document is in reality a template - even though it has
a .doc extension.

Yes

You open a document from the template and use SaveAs to save it as a
document. However, you need to find out why the documents are templates.
This is a typical symptom of a Word Macro Virus.
