new mail alert notification

OSX 10.4.11, MS Office and En'rage 2008 SP1

A few days ago the new mail alert notification stopped displaying. The
preference General Preferences > Notification > "When new mail arrives:
Display an alert on my Desktop" is still checked. In fact I unchecked it
and then rechecked it.

Has anybody encountered this before? Is it perhaps a known issue?
Is there a fix?

Did you click the speaker icon next to them to test your sound setup?

Not a known bug in Entourage 2008.

If you can hear sounds from other applications, but not the Entourage sounds
have a look at this Apple Knowledge Base article.

An application may have set your audio output settings too high. If that
fails and you have GarageBand, try opening and closing it.
