New mail automatically being categorized

For some odd reason tonight, all new mail I am getting is being
automatically marked as personal as opposed to none.

My personal category is colored green, so when new mail comes in, it is
being marked personal and the text is green, though my prefs request all new
mail be in Blue.

Any suggestions?

If the mail is from contacts who are in your address book with a
particular category assigned, Entourage will color it with that
category's color. For example, when I get mail from someone whose
contact is categorized as "Microsoft", it shows up in my inbox in the
color associated with that category (red, in case you were wondering :)

Is the mail you're getting from people who are in your address book?

Cheers,
-Paul

Check through all your mail Rules (Tools/Rules/Mail (POP) or (IMAP)).

It sounds like you have a rule that you inadvertently set to

<All messages>

<Change category> <Personal>
<some other action>

The criterion may not be <All messages>, it may be <Is not junk mail> or
something else that catches most messages.

By default, every new rule you make has as its first action
<Change category> <None>

it looks as if you may have flipped the second popup to <Personal>.

The only other possibility would be that your View preferences had "Unread"
as green color. But you say you have it set to "Blue". So what happens when
you read the message? Does it change color? If not - if it stays green -
then it's your Personal category (or another green category), not your View
prefs at work. When you open the message into its own window (or
control-click on it and inspect Categories in the contextual menu) does it
indicate "Personal" or another category on the Categories button or dropdown
list?
