New Messages Don't Appear

I have a few client machines, running Outlook 98 who are no longer receiving new messages automatically on their screen. They have to refresh their screens by clicking on another message or doing a Send/Recieve etc. to see new messages. We are running Exchange 5.5. I have just recently installed a VPN client on these machines and ever since then, this has been the case. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
