New Specification File

Sigh. The time has come to create a new specification file. My import data
has changed so, that it seems wise. Only, why is creating a new spec file so
much work! Maybe I'm not doing it right...

When I indicate my import file name, the field information isn't brought
into the spec file- correct? So do I need to retype/paste each field name in
my import file into the spec file field list?

If you could please run through the steps so I can make sure that I'm not
just creating more work, I would appreciate.

if you're creating a new import specification from scratch, then yes, you
will need to type the fieldnames you want in the Advanced window. but if you
have an existing specification that you need to modify, you can start by
opening that spec in the Advanced window. i'd probably immediately save it
under a new name, so as not to accidentally change the original spec. then
modify the new spec to suit your current needs, and save it with the same
name. so you're left with the modified new spec, and the original unchanged
spec (never hurts to have backup).

Select your import file name, then click on the Advanced button in the lower
left-hand corner.

On the dialog that appears, click on the Specs... button (fourth down on the
right-hand side) and select the name of the specification.

That's the method I've used when I am making changes to an existing spec
file.

Now, I want to create an entirely new spec file, and I'm wondering if I need
to manually create it by adding each field in my import into the spec file
field area and then saving the spec file as a new name.

Why not start with the existing spec, make your changes, then save it as a
new one?
