new tasks - sent to project owner

All,

I have setup a project and published to the Project Server so that each
large summary section of the project has been published with a different
manager (using the Republish and become manager means). However, when a
resource adds a new task under a specific summary task, it always goes to
the project owner. Have I configured my project incorrectly, or is this the
expected behavior for new tasks. I was hoping it would send the "manager"
of that portion of the project plan instead.

Any other alternatives that people have would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason Trust

This is the default behavior of the software, and I know of no way to change
this. In Project Server, there can be multiple managers for a project but
only one manager per task. This you already know and have set up correctly.
However, simply because you have set a manager for each section of the
project does not mean that Project Server assumes that new tasks should go
to the manager of tasks in the section. Instead, when there are multiple
managers of a project, the system assumes that that new tasks should go to
the Owner.

I would suggest the following process when dealing with new tasks submitted
by team members in PWA:

1. The project Owner should process these new task updates into the project
plan, then save and close the plan
2. The manager of the new task should then open the project, set the
Duration and dependencies for the new task
3. The manager of the new task should select the task and click
Collaborate - Publish - Republish Assignments, make sure the "Selected
tasks" option is selected at the top of the dialog, select the "Become the
manager for these tasks" option, and then click OK

Doing so specify the correct manager for the new task. Hope this helps.

Dale,

Thanks for your input. I appreciate your help.

The process you suggested will do, although it would be nice if there were
some way in the future, new version, etc. to handle this situation
differently.

I can see many situations where for each project you might have a "defined"
org structure that would allow certain resources to be assigned to certain
managers, etc. The notifications would go to that manager as opposed to the
owner of the project. I guess when I see the feature where I can setup
alerts for "My Resources" I would expect some way to view "My Resources"
information or to even configure who my resources are other than through the
republish assignments... feature.

Is there a way to see who your resources are after your have republished
assignments? Without having to do some custom filtering, etc.

I know you are only informing of what the software can do, but in case
anyone from Microsoft is listening, I was hoping I was not the only person
that would want more from the manager side of things, especially the add
task part.

Wishful thinking,
Jason

Thinking about this just a bit more, not that I am suggesting this is
possible now, but I have seen the project manager field set on summary
tasks, which would be a perfect way to pick up who should be notified given
users can add tasks by selecting the summary task they want it to show under
in 2003.

Just a thought.
