newbie getting started

Had OE for years. Now on a network and using Outlook. Have a few quickie
questions if someone will indulge. I've googled and haven't seen much help
on setting up the interface.

1) The config of Outlook is staggering. After I go through the trouble of
setting up the interface, is there a way to save that setup?

2) If I can save the setup, is it something I can pass to other users to get
theirs looking like mine?

3) re: Contacts: I hate the cards. How do I get a simple 'row' setup?

4) re: Reading mail. In OE I could <CTRL> click and keep selecting emails
one-by-one. With each new click, the focus is on the new email. It was handy
for selecting the spam and dumping it. Outlook will not give the focus to
the new email. Is there a setting for that?

5) In OE I could right-click and add a sender to my address book. Not in
Outlook. What's the shortest path to adding a new contact?

6) In OE I could look at the source code in any email. How do I do that with
Outlook?

7) Explain Categorize. What would I use it for? I filter for companies,
senders, etc.

8) If I 1) <enter> a numbered list is started. How do I shut that off by
default?

9) OE was plagued with corruption. Outlook is supposed to better. What is a
good folder size to archive?

10) Are there any sites demonstrating how to get the most from Outlook in an
office setting?

thanks!

Not really. You can export reg keys to save some settings.
2) If I can save the setup, is it something I can pass to other users to
get theirs looking like mine?

Only by exporting reg keys.
3) re: Contacts: I hate the cards. How do I get a simple 'row' setup?

Look on the View menu. Or show the Advanced toolbar and select one of the
table views from the Current view command.
4) re: Reading mail. In OE I could <CTRL> click and keep selecting emails
one-by-one. With each new click, the focus is on the new email. It was

Version of Outlook? It should work the same way as in OE.
5) In OE I could right-click and add a sender to my address book. Not in
Outlook. What's the shortest path to adding a new contact?

right click on the email address in the open message or reading pane.
6) In OE I could look at the source code in any email. How do I do that
with Outlook?

to see the header, right click on the message and choose options. To see the
source of html messages, right click on the message and choose view source.
You can't easily edit the source code when you are composing messages.
7) Explain Categorize. What would I use it for? I filter for companies,
senders, etc.

I use color categories to mark messages for follow up when I don't want a
reminder then use search folders to find them. I categorize contacts to
group them - then send mail to the groups instead of making DLs.
8) If I 1) <enter> a numbered list is started. How do I shut that off by
default?

Ctrl Z to undo. tools, options, other, spelling, autocorrect, autoformat as
you type tab
9) OE was plagued with corruption. Outlook is supposed to better. What is
a good folder size to archive?

Version of outlook? If outlook 2003/2007, you really don't need to archive.
I just file messages in other folders as I finish with the messages to keep
the inbox small.
10) Are there any sites demonstrating how to get the most from Outlook in
an office setting?

outlook-tips.net has a lot of tips for all outlook users, slipstick.com has
help for specific problems. microsoft's office online has a lot of articles
and training.

Diane,

Following on from your responses, in the answer to question 6, you stated
the following:

6) In OE I could look at the source code in any email. How do I do that
with Outlook?

to see the header, right click on the message and choose options. To see the
source of html messages, right click on the message and choose view source.
You can't easily edit the source code when you are composing messages.
<end quote>

I have a further question on this subject.
I also currently use OE6. If I see a message that I would like to check
first before opening it, I can right click on it, select properties and view
the message contents in plain text to confirm that it looks safe to open in
html format. I often use this if I get a mail admin message as these can
sometimes be problematic with webbugs.

Is it also possible to do this with Outlook 2003?

I have been able to find the ability to view headers, but not the body.
Viewing the source with your method requires that you open the message in
the first place, thereby defeating the issue.

Thanks
Martin

one-by-one. With each new click, the focus is on the new email. It was handy

the new email. Is there a setting for that?

Nope. While OE will display the most recently selected message in its Reading
Pane, Outlook won't, continuing to show you the first message you selected.
10) Are there any sites demonstrating how to get the most from Outlook in an
office setting?

Continuing the newbie thing...

I'm bulk emailing (legit) to our customers and I'm finding anything
interpreted as link by Outlook is redirected to the Junk email. My fear is
that many recipients will not realize what's happening. Is there a way to
get links or pseudo links past Outlook?

thanks

If you have the Reading Pane configured properly, it will be safe to view.
The right-click>View Source will do what you want.

Links don't trigger the Junk E-mail filter. Mismatches in how the link
appears and where it points do, as, I think, do anomalies on the message
routing (not coming from the domain it claiims as a source, for example). No
one but Microsoft really knows definitively what will trigger the junk mail
filter. If your customers really want your bulk messages, they'll add you to
their safe lists.

I had success testing with this...
http://www.mydomain.com/Mydata.pdf <- got redirected to Junk
www.mydomain.com/Mydata.pdf <- got redirected to Junk
mydomain.com/Mydata.pdf <- worked

Please define what you mean by 'configure the Reading Pane properly'.

I am assuming that you mean to set up the preview pane to read in plain text
only. This is obviously an option, but for two reasons. I actually don't use
a preview pane anyway and when I open an email, I want to read it in html.
That is why I prefer the method I use in OE which allows me to check dodgy
looking mail first before opening it for full viewing.

From what you are suggesting, I assume that this is not possible in Outlook
2003.

Please define what you mean by 'configure the Reading Pane properly'.

That you open messages in the Restricted network zone and that you don't
automatically download Internet content. Click Tools>Options>Security. The
Zone drop-down should be "Restricted". Click "Change Automatic Download
Settings". The top box should be checked. I also check the next two so that
if I trust the sender or the web site that is the destination of any links,
that content will download.
I am assuming that you mean to set up the preview pane to read in plain text
only.

No, that's not what I meant, but it's not a bad idea, per se.
From what you are suggesting, I assume that this is not possible in Outlook
2003.

Your conclusion is incorrect.
