Newbie Page Template Question

Sandie L.

Sorry to be so dense but...how do you apply one? I designed one, saved it as
a FP Template and then realized that I have no idea how to apply it. I don't
want to mess anything up!

A

Andrew Murray

format > shared borders

(hopefully, I assume you're asking "how to appy a shared border"?)

A

Andrew Murray

Ooop! just realised you're talking about templates......you open them from File
New > Page or Web then the list on right hand side opens; choose "New From
Template"

This is FP 2002 procedure....earlier version could be different and also in Fp
2003.

All you do is File > open

I have a Template that I saved. I want to apply or copy it to a page I have
in my Web now. I want to replace the text, graphics etc. on that page with
the new text, graphics I have on the Template. How do I do that?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

You can't as the templates function is a initial design-time only function,
meaning that you use it to create a new page, it can not be applied to
existing page, nor will page based on it be updated if you later change the
template.

However if you are using FP2003, there is now a dynamic web template which
will automatic update any pages it has been applied to when changed, as long
as you are working with either disk-based web or WSS based web.

Thanks. If I want to replace exiting content on one or more pages in an
active Web what is the most efficient way to do it?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Create new page, save under another name, open old page and copy and paste
the content into the of the new page, then save as the old page.

I'm not sure what you mean. Maybe you mistyped "into the of the new
page".Please clarify.

Sorry.

Select create File Menu | New | page, select your template, then save under
new name, then open you old page, and copy and paste the content into the
new page you just created based on the template

Thomas I know this is very, very basic stuff, but I'm really struggling
here.
Maybe I don't have the CONCEPT of a Template down right.

What I want to do is: 1. First, determine the page and the content I want
to replace 2. Use the predesigned Template I made to replace the CONTENT
ONLY on the old page. I don't want to replace the header, navigation or
footer.

This new Template that I want to use to replace the content only on the old
page could be just a blank 4, 6, 8, 12 or even 20 cell table that I could
quickly insert new photos in with some accompanying text.

Do I have the wrong concept of a Page Template, or is this something I
should
be able to easily do? Thanks for trying to help me.

Hi Sandie,

A page template is like a boiler plate design that you'd add to or subtract
from. If all your page have the say layout then a template works great to
keep the look consistent throughout.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

You have the wrong concept of how templates work in FP. Basically, you can't
do what you want using templates.

Now if you want to say insert a single banner or single group of images,
that would be the same on a set of pages and then be able to change that
single banner or single group of images on this set of pages, then look at
using the FP Include Page Component. Insert Menu | Web Component | Include
Page.

Only when you initial create the page based on the template, unless using
FP2003 with Dynamic Web Templates.

I'm sorry, but I think I'm confusing everyone. Let me use an example.

Let's say I want to design a site for a ladies clothing store. Within her
store, she has a shoe department and for the first month she wants to
display four pairs of shoes, each with a text description. Each new month
she wants to change the display. The following month she might want to
display 4, 6, 8, 12 or 20 new pairs, each with a new text description.

I thought this was a good use for a Template. My idea would be to design the
page for the first month with 8 cells (4 for photos, 4 for text) but knowing
in advance (because she told me) that in coming months she might want to
display 4, 6, 8, 12 or 20 pairs, I would design a Template with 40 cells to
copy over the old content area of the page. Then I would insert the
appropriate number of photos/text into the Template each month and paste
that Template over the page from the last month.

Finally, if I had leftover (blank) cells, I would just delete them from the
new page, leaving my 40 cell Template intact to use for the next month.

Obviously, I'm confused. But am I on the right track or should I just start
over? Thanks.

Thomas A. Rowe

Sandie,

A project like this is best done using a database driven application, where
it would automatically adjust the page display based on the number items
currently available to be displayed.

However if you create a page (template) with 40 cells, then each month you
would basically replace the current page and start over with a clean page of
40 cells.

Thanks Thomas, but I know nothing about database driven applications. You
said "each month you would basically replace the current page and start over
with a clean page of
40 cells". By "replace" please tell me what you mean?

Would I just open the saved Template, insert the new content into it and
then paste that new Template over the area in the page I want to replace,
being careful not to select the header, navigation or footer areas?

Sandie,

You would create your page exactly the way you want it to look, then save it
or save it as template, it would contain the navigation, headers and
footers, etc. then each month you would basically delete your current page
and then create a new page from your template.
