newbie: Project Server Accounts

J

Jeff

hey

At work we use Project 2007 Professional and Project Server 2007 and PWA
2007...

When adding new Project Server Accounts.... in the "Account Properties"
window. This Account Name field. Shall I in this field put name a unique
name, so everybody which connect to the Project Server uses a different
name?

The reason I ask is because I've read in a book ("Microsoft Office Project
2007") that in this field this field I should put an unique name, like my
name for example.... Which is very different from how we use it. We all have
the same account name, but we're also struggeling with an "login failed,
project could not
connect to server, please check your username and password" error when
starting Project 2007.

Any suggestions?

In this field, you should use any thing that is handy for users to
remember they are connecting to the Project Server. This becomes
important when users might connect to multiple Project Servers and
would fill in the names of their choices here such as "Production
Project Server" or "Test Project Server" or "Client A Project Server."

I don't understand your organization's requirements. If multiple people
need to access Project Server 2007, then each one needs his/her own unique
login account. Therefore, you should put each person's real name in the
Account Name field. Hope this helps.

Hey Dale!

thanks for responding so quickly to my post

I'm a bit confused here, my post has got 2 answers, and both says something
different. One post say use unique name and the other say it doesn't have to
be unique name....

any suggestions?

The confusion is because almost always, when Project Server (or
Windows) ask for a "Account Name" they are asking for a User Account
Name, which must be exact and unique to the user.

The "Microsoft Office Project Server Accounts" Dialog is one exception
to this. The "Account Name" field here is _only_ used to display the
choices when starting Project Pro and "Manually control connection
state" is selected. So they need to be unique on a given computer,
where you would have multiple account names if you were connecting to
multiple Project Servers. There is no reason for them to be unique
between computers, and I have set up many computers to use identical
"Account Names." Usually I will use something along the lines of
"Project Server 2007" or such.

Ignore my answer. I wrongly assumed you were talking about setting up user
accounts in PWA. My bad.
