Hi there,

I'm kinda new to MS FrontPage and website software in general. Since I have
FrontPage as part of MS Office I would ideally like to use it to create my
site. Can anyone tell me if it is for creating websites and if so is it any
good. The sort of site I want to create is survey based, so lots of forms,
and possible eCommerce. Is Frontpage upto doing this or should I look for
some other software.

Many thanks

Hi Jimbola,

Yes, it is used for creating web sites, and a few other things, and yes,
it's good!

FrontPage is a tool set, which has all the tools any web developer should
need to create a web site. That said, a carpenter's tool box is a set of
tools for building houses. In the case of forms and other interactive web
elements, yes, FrontPage has the tools. But on the other hand, if you were
hiring a carpenter, would you hire him because he had the tools, or because
he knew how to use them well?

What I'm getting at is that form handlers and interactive web sites are
somewhat advanced, and often require some programming skills to create the
form handlers, and dynamic elements of your UI. FrontPage comes with some
nice, simple, ready-made form handlers and other types of tools for creating
fairly simple forms and web applications. However, you may reach the upper
limit of what these wizards and tools can offer you. That doesn't mean you
can't use FrontPage to do your development, though. It means that you may
have to improve and/or add to your skill set. ASP, for example, doesn't
require any special tools (it is scripted), but it does require programming
skills.

Jimbola:

FrontPage, like any other piece of software, has its limitations. No one
package does it all. (If anyone out there knows of one, please let me know!)

You'll be able to get a very good start with FP, but as your skill level
increases, you'll learn other technologies and packages to supplement (and
maybe even replace) FrontPage.

The short answers is that yes, the type of site you describe is easily
within the capabilities of FrontPage.

I will strongly encourage you to frequent this newsgroup, as there are many
real experts participating and willing to give you their time and share their
knowledge. I've been bailed out more times than I can count!
