Newbie With Word: Help, Help Please: Horiz. Solid Black Lines In Document ?

Hello:

Feel foolish asking this, but am a relatively new Word user, and I've spent
hours trying to figure this
out, and just haven't been able to. Also went to Barnes and Noble this
morning, and scanned at least half a dozen books on Word and Office, but
could find absolutely no reference to this "problem," or formatting effect.

Tried posting in two Word Newsgroups, but no luck.

Would be most grateful for some help, as I imagine most of you experts
probably know
immediately what this is, after you stop laughing over my true ignorance.

Have installed both my old Word from 1993 along with the new Word 2002 on
to my
new XP PC. Wow, is everything different. All I want is to be able to do
real simple word processing.

Anyway, when I cut and paste some text from one document into the one
I am working on, Word seems to put in a solid black line at the point where
the pasting was done, across the entire page. I now have several horizontal
solid black lines on my document.

They appear if I do similar pasting in either the old or new Word I now have
on my PC

In Print Preview, they also show up.

Let me describe the horiozontal line going across the page a bit better:

If I place the "I" Beam cursor over any of these solid black horizontal
lines, two very small bars appear directly on top and beneath the line. It
is then possible to drag the line up and down a bit. (This may be best the
key to what it is ?)

I thought that it might be what's apparently called a Page Break, but now
not so
sure that it is this, as it shows up in Print Preview. It may not even be
related to the Pasting operation; not sure ?

Any idea what this is ?

How do I get rid of it ?

How do I prevent it from happening again ?

Anyway, what do I do to get rid of it ?

Much thanks; really appreciate your time.

Bob

It sounds like ---------- and _______________ are automatically being
converted into border formatting. I've never seen it happen when pasting,
though... only when I enter those characters and press Enter. In any case...

To prevent this from happening anymore, choose Tools - AutoCorrect Options -
AutoFormat as You Type, and remove the check next to Border Lines. In fact,
while you're here, peruse the other options, as there likely are other
things you don't want happening automatically, as well.

To get rid of existing occurrences, click in the line immediately above the
heavy black line, choose Format - Borders and Shading - Borders tab - None -
OK.

Hello Herb:

Just want to say a real big thanks for taking the
time to help me out. Your suggestion did it !

Doubt that I ever would have figured it out myself.

My opinion is that the only option and bell-and-whistle missing in Word
is one where the whole thing reverts to an extremely simple, no frills, word
processor !

Thanks again, and best regards,
Bob Rose
