I have taken over the publishing and editing responsibilities of a school newsletter that has previously been created in microsoft publisher is there a way to convert it to a word document so I can start with an old newsletter?

I'm afraid not - Publisher is not available for the Mac, it doesn't have a
compatible output format for any of the Mac (or PC) programs, and there is
very little that can actually be retained from a Pub file even using some of
the few options available.

However, in Word 2008 go to File> Project Gallery & on the New page select
the Newsletters listing. There are a number of templates there which can
make your job easier.

Work in Publishing Layout View. Modify the new document to suit your
requirements, then Save As in template format so you can generate new
editions of the newsletter based on your custom design. Have a look here for
some ideas & how-tos:

If you have any problems or questions post back with specific info & someone
will be glad to help you along.
